As some of us are not able to access to Adobe software yet, we are going to do
physical college as our first practical exercise.
Mr Fauzi showed us a video as example. The video included the procedures,
tools and ways to create a physical college.
Then, Mr Fauzi showed us some past students work.

Week 2:
Introduction to composition
1) Focal point
It helps viewers’ eyes naturally settle on the important pieces of
the design first.
2) Scale & Hierarchy
It helps to draw attention toward and away from certain
elements.
3) Balance the element
A good technique for mastering asymmetrical balance is to think
of each element as having a ‘weight’ to it.
Smaller objects might ‘weigh’ less than larger objects, and heavily
textured elements might ‘weigh’ more than flatly colored
elements.
4) White space
It helps to boost the design’s clarity and overall look by
balancing out the more complicated and busy parts of the
composition.
Golden Ratio
The Golden Ratio is a mathematical ratio. It is commonly found in
nature, and when used in a design, it fosters organic and natural-looking compositions
that are aesthetically pleasing to the eye.
Fig 1.2.1 Golden ratio
Fig 1.2.2 Golden ratio in the nature.
In a design, golden ratio can give harmony and proportion which give a
sense of artistry. Golden Ratio is to set your dimensions to 1:1.618

Week 3:
Introduction to Photoshop
In this week, Mr Fauzi give us some introduction regarding the tools in
Photoshops.
Lasso Tool
Pen Tool
The pen tool is a versatile tool in Photoshop that can be used to create extremely precise shapes and paths, using manually placed anchor points.
Although commonly used to make selections, the pen tool was not natively made as a “selection tool”
This is a video of pen tool tutorial:

Layering
Layers are different images stacked on top of each other. You can use each layer without affecting another one to make adjustments. Together they form one final image.
The advantage of using Layers is that you can save a Photoshop file with all the layers included. This means you can use layers for non-destructive editing
Week 4:
Adjustment Layers
Adjustment layers in a non-destructive image desiting tools,
A new layer will appear over the image. The properties panel will allow you to modify your adjustment later, which in turn will modify the image.
With the adjustment layers, we are able to edit and discard adjustments or restore the original image at any time. This will make your workflow in Photoshop more flexible and efficient, and is an absolute must-know.
These are some modifier for adjustment layers:
1. Brightness/Contrast:
2. Level
3.Curves
4. Exposure
5. Selective Colour
Filter
Filter is used to change colour, add blur or add completely new image effects.
Mr Fythullah gave us some brief introduction regarding the module and
assignment. Besides that, he also introduced us some simple knowledge about
Photoshop and the importance of Photoshop for a designer.
Week 2:
In this week, Mr Fythullah gave us lecture about the rule of thirds. The rule of thirds is a composition guideline that places your
subject in the left or right third of an image, leaving the other two thirds
more open.
Fig 2.1 Example of the rule of thirds
Gridlines are used in the rule of thirds. To apply the rule to the artwork,
simply use the gridlines to position essential compositional elements. The
rule of thirds also identifies four power points at the center of each
gridline intersection.
Fig 2.2 Four power point
The step-by-step guide to apply the Rule of Thirds:
1) Placement of Subject:
When composing the shot, avoid placing the main subject directly in the
centre of the frame.
Instead, position it along one of the imaginary lines or at one of the
points where the lines intersect.
2) Balance:
If there is multiple elements in the scene, consider placing them along
the grid lines or at the intersections.
It will create balance and harmony.
3) Background and Horizon:
For landscapes pr scenes with a prominent horizon, avoid placing it
directly in the centre.
Instead, position the horizon along one of the horizontal lines, either
the upper third or the lower third.
4) Use it as a guide, Not a Rule:
The Rule of Thirds is not a strict rule, we can feel free to break the
rule for more compelling and dynamic ompositions.
5) Practice:
Practice make perfect.
It is the best way to develop a better sense on how to apply the rule of
thirds.
Week 3:
300 dpi is recommended for normal design work, if working on larger design (A0), use smaller dpi
(minimum 72 dpi)
Mr Fytullah gave introduction regarding different size of document.
A4 usually use in commonweal countries.
A4 can be enlarged into A1 and A0
D4 size is used in United State
Week 4:
Blending mode is an important technic which need to be mastered in Photoshops. Pressing "ALT" key while adjusting the blending value can give a smoother effect.
Try to apply the rule of third, golden ratio and symmetrical composition in the digital collage.
Mr Fauzi instructed us to set up our e-portfolio and pinterest board. The
first exercise for this module is to pick 3 graphic design artwork from
Pinterest and explain it.
This is a poster for the movie, The Zone Of Interest. The movie depicts a German family who built a dream life in a house next to the Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II. The poster perfectly shows the sarcasm and aim of the movie, which is the contrast between the affluent Nazi family and the victims of World War II in the concentration camp.
In this poster, the sky is illustrated in black and consumes about two-thirds of the space, which gives the feeling of despair and oppression. Most information such as the title, director, and logo areplaced in the lower part to balance the “weight” given by the black area. Besides that, this artwork is divided purposely to create two zones. The inside zone, which is the German family’s house, and the outside zone, which is the concentration camp. As a graphic design artwork, it has clean and direct syntax in the delivery of messages.
This is the poster for the movie, Oppenheimer. In this artwork, Opprnheimer's hat is replace by a push button, which represent the button to launch the nuclear weapon. The button that replaces the hat also symbolize that he will live forever in remorse for having created a nuclear weapon. His eyes are not shown in the artwork to create a mysterious and grieve atmosphere.
I'm impressed by this design in many aspects. The use of colours are
vibrant, distorted and highly contrasted, which give a feeling of chaos.
The design of sphere unite all the different colours. The colours that
flow out of the sphere shows the "fluidity" of different colours that
mixed together. At the same time, they crossed the words which give
interaction between two design elements. The typography used leads
the viewer's vision around the sphere.
Week 2:
In the practicle class, we started to work on the physical
collage.
There is some suggestions given by Mr Fythullah:
Apply the rule of thirds for easy but powerful composition.
Put the portrait in the four power points
Try to apply asymmetrical balance in the collage
Try to do multiple version
Here is some of my rough design while developing idea:

Fig 3.2.3 Rough design 3
Fig 3.2.4 Best composition design
Week 3:
In this week, we need to finalize our physical collage and start to the digital collage by using Photoshop.
For digital collage, we were given some picture to composite. We need to use Lasso tools and Magic Wand tools to crop out the image. Furthermore, we are suggested to use different type of layers and blending mode to further inprove the visual impact.

Week 4:
In this week, we needed to apply adjustment layers in our best composition digital collage.
Fig 3.4.1 Digital Collage 2 (Best composition)
This is a symmetrical balance composition, with the canvas divided into two by vertices, emphasizing the contrast between the two sections.I aim to convey a narrative around the concept of "Mirror."
In the right part, difference mode layers are used, giving the objects a more psychedelic visual. In the left part, I decreased the saturation of the objects to enhance the contrast against the red background.
In this section, I learned about the proper procedure in creating a digital collage, including the use of the pen tool, magic wand tool, and layers. Additionally, I gained a deeper understanding of layer arrangement. I also learned about the blending mode layer in Photoshop, which helps me blend different graphics seamlessly.
Fig 3.4.2 Digital Collage with Adjustment Layer and Filter
In the left part, black and white adjustment layer is used.
In the right part, an infrared gradient and posterize adjustment layer are used. Infrared gradient is used to approach the visual of infrared graphics. Besides, posterize adjustment layer is used to reduce the number of colours in the design, simplifying the color palette.
In both parts, a noise filter is applied to add texture, further enhancing the visual information provided to the viewer.
This week, I learned about the use of adjustment layers and filters. These tools significantly enhance the visual interest of my design. I am impressed by the convenience of adjustment layers, particularly their flexibility in adjusting the density of the effects.
In my digital photography class, I enhanced my understanding and skills in compositing and editing images. The assignments allowed me to experiment with various techniques and tools, which was both challenging and interesting. I am glad to have an opportunity to learn the proper way to use Photoshop. I had explored the using of layer blending mode, adjustment layers, filters, pen tools, magic wand tools and others. Achieving the right color balance was another significant part of my learning. This process involves adjusting the colors in an image to make them appear more natural or to convey a specific atmosphere.
