LECTURES

Week 7:

Mr Hafiz gave us some briefing regarding the assignment. We were instructed to create a animated album cover of the artist, Frank Sinatra. We need to choose one song his song. By appreciating the artistry and lyrics, we required to sketch initial ideas , figure out storyline, illustrate and compose and animate a ‘moment’ base of the understanding from the chosen song.

Illustrated typography must be included. Foreground, midground and background must be considered and illustrated. Artsyle such as Minimalist, Retro, Pop Art and Art Nouveau are recommended.

These are the recommended size for the artwork:

Week 8:  (Independent Learning Week)

Week 9:

In this week, Mr Hafiz introduced Pencil tools in Adobe Illustrator. It is a versatile tool used for freehand drawing. It allows you to create open and closed paths, and it mimics the experience of drawing with a real pencil on paper.

Next, Mr Hafiz initroduced Type on Path Tool. It is a powerful feature that allows you to place text along a path or shape, following its contours. This tool is useful for creating dynamic text designs and integrating text seamlessly into your illustrations.

For the assignment, we are encouraged to use Image Trace & Exapnd function to study and recreate other artists' works.

Week 10:

Mr Hafiz gave briefing about 2D intertwine, blending mode and envelope distortion.

These are some tips and instructions given:

  • Hold Alt while creating shape will draw from centre.
  • Select by using direct selection tool, select "Convert selected anchor points to corner". This will turn the round corner to shape corner.

  • Object > Expand, turn dirtorted line into stroke & stroke into fill.
  • For envelope distort, the shape as distort reference need to be on the top.

Fig 1.10.2 Envelope Distort

  • Ctrl + Y or isolation mode to show the original text without distortion.

  • Click Object > Expand to turn it into shape.

  • Compound path to combine all path if want to use envelope dirtort to distort more that 1 object.
  • Intertwine tools to overlap objects in dynamic new ways. Different shapes, text, and 2D and 3D objects can be interwined and edited.
These are the example of using inetrwine tool:

INSTRUCTIONS

Task 2: Decisive Moment

Assignment 1: Fly Me To the Moon

Envelope Distort & Blend Option

Firstly, I started by doing research regarding the artstyle such as Retro Art, Pop Art and Art Nouveau.

I prefer the warm colour scheme used in Retro Art and Art Nouveau. In Pop Art and Retro Art, shadows are relatively flat and simple, which is easier to achieve in Adobe Illustrator. Plain and flat lightings are used to retain the inherent colour of the objects.

In Mucha's artwork, the continuous lines are significant in leading the viewer's vision.

These artstyles show the same characteristic, which are the balancce between positive space and negative space. This make the composition of the artwork feels coherent, complete and clean.

I choose the song "Fly Me To The Moon. Then, I sketched out some initial ideas:

Fig 2.1.4 Sketches

Rationale:

-Genre: Jazz
-Saxophone, trumpet, trombone and piano make this song instrumentally nourishing.
-Love the lysics, "And let me see what spring is like, On a-Jupitar and Mars"
-Elements: Moon, music instrument, music signature, Space (Jupitar and Mars) , flowers (spring), clouds

In the first listen of the song, I’m attracted by the preforemance of woodwind instrumentals. Thus, I choose trumpet and Frank Sinatra silhouette as main elements in my cover. The lysrics "And let me see what spring is like, On a-Jupitar and Mars", inspired me to create spring environment as the scene of the cover. The main element that lead the viewer’s vision will be the illustrated “winds” with different colours.

I choose retro art style as I love the vintage visual effect. Besides, I also more familiar with warm colours which are mainly used in retro art

Fig 2.1.5 Colour Palette

Overall, the colour palette is mainly warm colours (2,3 and 4). Dark colour (1) is chosen to create contrast in value. A relatively cold colour (5) is chosen to give balance to the colour selection and act as complementary colour.

I started by tracing our the character and trumpet.

Fig 2.1.7 Character and trumpet tracing

This is my first composition and more detailed cersion. I felt the composiiton is a bit messy and the character didn't stand out from the cover. Mr Hafiz suggested me to further decide the focus point of the cover, be aware of the visual leading. Furthermore, keep some part of the cover clean to create contrast with the focus point.

Fig 2.1.8 & 9 Version 1 and 2

This is my second attempt, I try to simplify the whole design and add more elements around the character to show the design hierarchy. Besides, the "N" for the word "MOON" is replaced by Chinese character "月" which mean moon. I prefer the 4th version.

Fig 2.1.10 & 11 Version 3 and 4

Lastly, I add more winid blowing effect to further enrich the cover design.

2.2

For the animation, I plan to do it as a loop GIF. I start by re-arranging the layers in Adobe Illustrator before importing into After Effect.

Fig 2.2.1 Layers in Adobe Illustartor

I add simple keyframes for position, scale, rotation and opacity. I used Easy Ease function and Graph Editor to adjust the movement of graphic.

I added some effect for the animation:
  • Force Motion Blur & Fast Box Blur
  • Wave Wrap (Wind)
  • Glow (Glowing effect of the stars)
  • Gaussian Blur

FEEDBACK

Week 9:
Mr Hafiz suggested me to further decide the focus point of the cover, be aware of the visual leading. Furthermore, keep some part of the cover clean to create contrast with the focus point.

Week 11:
Mr Hafiz approve the animated cover and E-portfolio.

REFLECTION

Throughout the Task 2, I found interesting while doing the exercise and given task. I have enhanced my skill in Adobe Illustrator by learning Envelope Distort, Blend Option and Interwine Tool. Besides, I have more exploration in visualizing words and lyrics by doing the album cover art.
