LECTURES

Week 11:

In this week, we are given briefing about the final project, self titled. Self-titled is an exploration project for the students to express their own individuality and reflect their personality into digital art self-expressionThe main idea is to build up self-confidence and discover their interest

These are some requirement for the project:

  • At least 50% of camera photography
  • We are encouraged to take picture of object and ourself.
  • The duration of video is 15 seconds. Export the video in MP4.
In the idea development period, we need to write a biography about ourselves and statement of our work.

Intro to After Effect

Adobe After Effects (AE) is a 2.5D animation software used for animation, visual effects, and motion picture compositing. It is used in the post-production phase to manipulate imagery.

AE create motion graphics animation works by manipulating vector and rasterized art to create and tell a story. Both photography and videography can be integrated in AE.

Fig 1.11.1 After Effect

Pre-Compositing in Photoshop

Before importing to AE, compositing is usually done in Photoshop. All the layers need to be arrange and rename accordingly so that it will be organize and easy to be animated in AE

Compositing in After Effect

After Effect create digital visual effects, motion graphics, and compositing application, elements such as images, video, vector and more can be imported into.

*All the layer elements need to be organized and synchronized to the external software platforms such as Photoshop & Illustrator.

*After Effects links to the media instead of embed it.

Week 12

Mr Fauzi gave tutorial and basic skills in using After Effect. We are encouraged to use other elements and textures for the background. Besides, we can find loop audio sound from Youtube and add it into the animation.

If the audio is downloaded in mp 4 format, the visible button need to be turn off so it only show the audio.

*Be aware of the composition while animating, the overall composition need to be clear.

*The animation need to be in loop.

TUTORIAL

Week 11:

This is the tutorial video given by Mr Fauzi about Kinetic Typography using After Effect.

Fig 2.11.1 Kinetic Typography

In this video, Mr Fauzi showcase the function of keyframe. By adjusting keyframe, we can able to timing and spacing of the animation. We can create 3 keyframes point to get a curze control.

Each aniamtion need to be grouped different composition. Animate each pre comp first and then combine into a final aniamtion.

PRACTICAL

Week 12:

After Effect Exercise

These are the layers and composition:

I apply Posterize Time effect on the animation adjustment layer to limit the frame rate to 12 fps to create a hand made effect.

Progress

I use Threshold and Contrast adjustment layers to manipulate the black and white region of the photo.

I try to apply gradient to imitate the infrared thermography effect. I use Liquify effect to manipulate the face.

Fig 4.12.5 Gradient and Liquify effects

I used some ripped paper and sticker images. Multiply adjustment layer is used to create shading.

After a few testings, I decide to use this gradient. Besides, I use Invert adjustemnt layer on the hand.  I use some effetcs such as Nosise texture, Color Halftone and Gaussian Blur to add some details.

1. Progress

I plan to do transition with glitch and shift channel effect, which I think fit the aesthetic of the poster.

REFLECTION

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this project. It provided me with an opportunity to explore and refine my own aesthetic using Photoshop and After Effects. I found the learning process of After Effects particularly engaging. The software was intuitive and easy to get use to, offering a wide range of tools and effects to manipulate graphics and footage. This class allowed me to experiment with different techniques and styles, enhancing my digital photography and imaging skills significantly.
