Experience
This module is a fresh and interesting experience for me, as this is the first time I am diving into design research methodology. I am learning to approach a topic from a more structured perspective, which is quite different from my usual creative process. Honestly, it is really challenging to research a topic deeply and analyze different perspectives at the same time.
The given three tasks make me realize the importance of writing and justifying an opinion as a designer/artist. A designer's role is not just about creating based on feelings and intuitive thought, rationale and theory play a significant role in shaping a good design. These tasks have taught me how to articulate my ideas clearly, with the support of practical theory and evidence, at the same time consider different perspectives. This process has helped me understand that good design is as much about critical thinking and informed decisions as it is about creativity and aesthetics.
Observation
The topic I chose, 'Aesthetic-Usability Effect,' is something I've always been curious about and passionate about. I'm really glad I have this opportunity to develop a study on how aesthetics influence user perceptions and experiences on different applications. This topic aligns with my interest in creating visually appealing yet functional designs.

Besides, I have observed multiple successful interface designs including Figma and Procreate, that strike a perfect balance between aesthetic and usability. These examples provided me with a deeper understanding of the elements and underlying logic required in creating a great design. By analyzing these interfaces, I’ve learned how effective design choices are made, such as layout, color schemes and typography in enhancing user satisfaction and reducing cognitive load. These observations have expanded my boundary in design thoughts
Findings
I have gained plenty of knowledge by reviewing others' papers and critiquing my own opinion simultaneously. By this process, I learned the value of considering diverse perspectives and identifying strengths and weaknesses in a particular argument. One of the biggest takeaways for me throughout this module is the development of a strong sense in judging research problems and methodologies. By working through Task 2 and Task 3, I can feel my analytical skills improving, particularly in identifying suitable research approaches and evaluating their effectiveness. This process has also enhanced my ability to align research questions with appropriate methodologies including both quantitative and qualitative surveys. I have been proud of myself to see how this growth is shaping my confidence and precision in tackling research challenges.
Overall, this module is undoubtedly full of highs and lows, which have allowed me to showcase my abilities beyond just designing. It has pushed me to develop critical thinking, research skills, and the ability to articulate and defend my perspective effectively. However, the process of gathering insights, understanding the application of the topic and analyzing the respondents' thoughts are absolutely rewarding.
