Project 2: Double Exposure
Week 7:
Double exposure refers to merging multiple images. the goal is to make the
design surreal and emotional. They usually feature sihouette.
1. Using the Tlit-Shift Effect
Filter> Blur Gallery> Tlit -Shift
Fig 1.7.1 Tlit-Shift Effect
2.Create Fake Reflection
This add interesting textures to a double exposure photography. This effect
can be achieve by seperating window photo.
Fig 1.7.2 Fake Reflection
3. Experiment with simple portraits and details textured.
Combining something plain with something complicated to achieve a balanced
resulted.
Fig 1.7.3 Portraits and details textured.
4. Convert the design to Black & White
Limit the colour using will strengthen the emotion in the double- exposure
images. It gives a valuable feeling.
Fig 1.7.4 Black & White
5. Work with sihouette
Sihouette can be used to create unique composite images.
Fig 1.7.5 Sihouette
6. Pick two random photo.
Random doesn't mean it's not meaningful. Sometimes, it may led to great
feedback and creative growth.
Fig 1.7.6 Random photos
7. Make simple objects look fascinating.
Take photos of different objects and try to transform it into something
else. This technique will enhance our imagination.
Fig 1.7.7 Simple objects
8. Use Shadow
Shadows are as effective as sihouettes in this genre. It's simple to be
achieved and usually gave fascinating result
Fig 1.7.8 Shadow
Blending modes is an experiemental process as it is hard to predict the
results, more attempt need to be conducted to achieve an ideal design.
These are the catagories of blending modes.
Fig 1.7.9 Blend mode groups
There are some modes that are commonly used, which are Multiply,
Screen, Overlay and Soft Light.
Fig 1.7.10 Commonly used blend mdoes
Guide guide to Blending Mode
- Select the Layer 1 to be on top of the Background
- Go to the Blending Modes option
- Select “Screen”
- As a result, all of the pixels on Layer 1 will be selected as Screen blending mode.
Week 9:
Realism v.s. Surrealism
Realism:
- Takes subject matters of the ordinary and common world which we call "reality." It almost always takes a non-exotic and non-extraordinary subject matter and theme.
Surrealism:
- Cultural movement focused on type of arts to express about the artist’s idea themselves.
- It explores the subconscious mind, with subject matters concentrating on dream-images and often aims to distort the ordinary and what we call reality
- Surrealism defies logic. Dreams and the workings of the subconscious mind inspire surrealistic art filled with strange images and bizarre juxtapositions.
The Great Masturbator - Salvador Dali
Criteria while createing Surrealism artworks:
- Dream-like scenes and symbolic images
- Unexpected, illogical juxtapositions
- Bizarre assemblages of ordinary objects
- Primitive or child-like designs
To create Surrealism artworks:
- Sketch: Draw the vision and idea out roughly. Don't finesse any details yet, but just lay out key points.
- Find reference: Gathering reference that directly relate to the idea.
Mindset during creation:
- "Does this look real ?": When surrealism is compelling enough that it seems believable, it works best; nonetheless, people are aware that the presented subject matter is fictional and not real.
- Make it happen to the best of your ability: Try to tackle a difficult task will teach us the abilities that we need for the next time.
Week 10:
Mr Fauzi gave briefing regarding the TISDC 2024 Poster Competition. We need to
create a poster poster design composition using elements of photography, typography and
vector graphics.
Catogery: Visual Design
Theme: Equality
Size Format: A1 (300dpi)
Week 7:
In this exercise, the accuracy of clipping mask is important, which it affects
the final result.
Quick way to mask out character:
1. Click W for Object Selection/Quick Selection/Magic Wand tools
2. Click “Select Subject” at Option bar
3. Click “Select and Mask” at Option bar
After that, under Select & Mask> View Mode> Select Overlay, adjust
Opacity. Select Refine Edge Tools, adjust the size and hardness of the
brush, brush the hair to adjust the mask.
Fig 2.7.1 Refine Edge Tools
Project 2A: Double Exposure Exercise:
We were given some pictures for this exercise.
I follow the tutorial video to mask out the character.
Fig 3.1.1 Mask out character
Fig 3.1.2
I use brush tool with low hardness to erase some clipping mask area of
the forest.
Fig 3.1.3 Erase clipping mask area
I use Level adjustemnt layer to adjust the contrast of the photo

Fig 3.1.5 Level adjustment layer
Later, I put other elements inside.

Lastly, I applied the gradient

My Own Double Exposure Photo:
My idea for this exericise is nuclear disaster. Sunflowers are often
planted after nuclear disasters due to their ability to absorb and accumulate
certain radioactive isotopes and heavy metals from the soil. Thus, I think it
is a suitable to use the technic of double exposure to fuse nuclear power
plant and sunflower into one image.
This is my own picture:
Fig 3.2.1 My own picture
I crop the picture and adjust it by using Black & White and
Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer.
Fig 3.2.2 Piture after cropping
Fig 3.2.3 Nuclear power plant
Fig 3.2.3 Sunflower
Fig 3.2.5 Caution signs
I use layer mask and refine edge tools to insert the images. The focus
point will be the sunflower, while the nuclear power plant image is
flipped horiontally.
Fig 3.2.6 Initial Composition
Later, I try to insert the caustion signs and some flower fields behind
the sunflower. I also adjust the brightness and contrast of the sunflower
by using adjustment layer.
Fig 3.2.7 Final Composition
I use two different colour gradient for the sunflower+caution signs and
the nuclear power plant. The sunflower+caution signs' gradient has more
hues of colours to grab the viewer's attention. On the otherhand, I use
a two-toned gradient for the nuclear power plant to further increase the
contrast with the sunflower. For the flower field, I retains the
original colour and decrease the saturation.
Fig 3.2.8 Gradient for sunflower and caution signs
Fig 3.2.9 Gradient for nuclear power plant
Fig 3.2.8 Result
I add some noise effect to the sunflower and half-tones effect to the
nuclear power plant.

Throughtout my research, I found out that
space allocation for farmed fish is crucial for the health and
welfare of the fish.
Fish often live in complex social groups, they use tools and
exhibit signs of anxiety and pain. However, fish are treated
like commodities by the fishing industry.
In the factory farm industry, fish suffer for up to two years in
water that has high levels of ammonia and nitrates. Besides, the
lack of legal protection results in widespread inhumane practices,
where fish are subjected to overcrowded conditions, rough handling,
and brutal slaughter methods. Fish farming often involves confining
fish in small, cramped spaces that lead to stress, disease, and poor
overall health.
My idea for this project will be limited and overcrowded space for
farmed fish.
These are some reference images and poster references:
Fig 3.3.2 Three poster references
These are my sketches before the poster design:
I want to show the idea of overcrowded \, thus I used blockes to
metaphor teh limited space for farmed fish. Besides, I purposely block
some words in the poster to show this idea too.
I used blocks to represent the limited space available to farmed fish.
Words and images are strategically blocked, visually demonstrating the
overcrowding these fish experience. The blocked words symbolize how
the fish's natural behaviors, health, and well-being are compromised
due to their restricted environment.
Fig 3.3.3 Sketch 1 & 2
Fig 3.3.4 Progress 1 & 2
Mr Fytullah wanted me to proceed with the first idea, which shows
more visual impact than the second idea. In the lecture, Mr
Fauzi suggested us to further study the refernece we choose and
not to over changing the composition. This is because the over
changing usually result in a messy composition.
Fig 3.3.5 "OVERCROWDED", final poster design
Title: OVERCROWDED
Summary:
In fish farming, space allocation is crucial for the health
and welfare of the fish. Typically, each fish is given between 0.2
to 0.3 m³ of water to thrive. This lead to stress, disease, and
poor overall health for farmed fish. This link to the concept of
equality, emphasizing that all living beings deserve adequate
space and conditions to thrive. This poster is aiming to spread
this awareness and support sustainable fish farming.
Throughtout this project, I have a basic understanding on double exposure
effect and it's function. Initially, the concept seemed
straightforward, but as I delved into the exercise, I realized the
creativity required to produce a visually ideal double exposure image. On
the other hand, the poster design gave an opportunity to expand my idea
from the last semester.
